Valedictorian. Mother. The Foundation of Us All.
Annie Lois Lucas was born on March 1, 1945, in Deatsville, Alabama, to a family whose roots ran deep in resilience and faith. From the very beginning, she was exceptional. She began school at age four, skipped grades, and by the time she reached high school, her teachers had no doubt: Annie was destined for something great.
In 1963, she graduated valedictorian of her class — a remarkable achievement for a young Black woman in the rural South. She had earned scholarships to attend the University of Alabama. She was accepted. She was ready.
She later enrolled in a technical community college for Business. Three months before graduation, she fell ill. Her mother, fearing it would kill her to continue, made her stop.
"She would NEVER get in the way of an opportunity, no matter her own fears and insecurities. The one thing she now wanted more than her own degree was for all of her children to graduate from college."
In October of 1965, at the age of 20, Annie met and married Jerry Andrew Green. Over the next 19 years, she gave birth to nine children. She worked full-time, raised them with morning and evening worship, read to them until she fell asleep mid-sentence, and drove three hours to change a flat tire without ever asking for praise.
She sowed. And she reaped. Every single one of her nine children earned a college degree.
Nine Children. Nine Degrees.
This photo says everything. Annie, surrounded by her children — each wearing the shirt of their university. This is what a mother's love looks like when it's fulfilled.
Auburn, Alabama A&M, Oakwood, DeVry — every school represented. Every dream fulfilled.

Annie's greatest achievement wasn't a degree with her own name on it. It was the nine degrees earned by the children she raised, prayed over, and never stopped believing in.

Continuing What Annie Started
The Annie L. Green Foundation was established to honor Annie's life by doing what she could never stop doing — removing barriers, opening doors, and believing in young people who deserve a chance.
We award scholarships to deserving students at Alabama A&M University and Oakwood University — the same schools where five of Annie's own children built their futures.
Resilience
Annie recited "Try, Try Again" to her children. We carry that same spirit into every scholarship we award.
Unconditional Support
Annie drove 3 hours to change her daughter's flat tire and drove back without a word. That's the love behind this foundation.
Education as Liberation
The door that was closed to Annie in 1963 is the door we hold open for every student we support today.
Community
Rooted in Alabama, connected to HBCUs, and committed to the communities where Annie's legacy lives on.
Our Director
The Annie L. Green Foundation is led by Julius Green — Annie's second-born son, Alabama A&M alumnus, and one of the nine whose life she transformed.
Julius Green
CFO, entrepreneur, and Alabama A&M Bulldog. Julius established the Annie L. Green Foundation to honor his mother's sacrifice and ensure that her dream of educational opportunity lives on — not just in their family, but in every student who walks through the door she was never allowed to open.
A board of directors — Annie's nine children — is currently forming.
